Abstract

First Paragraph:
Beyond Banneker: Black Mathematicians and the Paths to Excellence by Erica N. Walker is an exploration of the educational lives of 35 African Americans who earned a doctorate in mathematics, based on extensive record- ed interviews with all of them. Three earned their doctorates before 1965, twelve between 1965 and 1985 (the “second generation”) and the remaining since 1985 (the “third generation”). There are many long quotes from these interviews.
